The Growth Mindset: Competing your today With “your” Yesterday

We live in a world that constantly encourages comparison—who is ahead, who earns more, who achieved more, who got there first. But comparison asks the wrong question: “Am I better than them?”

A better question is: “Am I better than I was yesterday?”

Without realizing it, we can spend so much time watching someone else’s journey that we lose sight of our own.

But here is a question worth asking: What if the person you should be competing with is not beside you, but behind you?

Your journey has its own starting point, challenges, setbacks, opportunities, and pace. Someone else’s progress does not diminish yours. A delayed promotion, a missed opportunity, or a slower beginning does not mean you are falling behind……Instead, look inward.

Are you learning more than you did yesterday? Handling challenges with greater maturity? Making better decisions? Becoming more patient, capable, courageous, or disciplined?

Progress rarely announces itself. Sometimes, it is simply responding differently to a situation that once overwhelmed you. Sometimes, it is having the courage to begin again. Sometimes, it is choosing consistency when nobody is watching. The goal is not to become better than everyone else. It is to become better than the version of yourself that existed yesterday. So, before you look around and ask how far others have gone, pause and ask yourself: How far have I come—and if I continue growing, who might I become? Perhaps the greatest measure of success is not how far ahead you are of others, but whether the person you are becoming is someone your past self would be proud to meet.
